DEARBORN, Mich., April 6, 2009 – Thousands of Mustang enthusiasts from all over the world will converge in Birmingham, Ala. on April 17, 2009 – officially declared “Mustang Day” by the state of Alabama – to celebrate the 45th anniversary of an American icon: the Ford Mustang.

Ford and the Mustang Club of America will mark the 45th anniversary of America’s favorite pony car with a four-day celebration at the Barber Motorsports Park. The event is expected to draw more than 2,500 Mustang enthusiasts and their beloved steeds, as well as hundreds of thousands of spectators.

“For four and a half decades, Ford has connected with more than 9 million owners celebrating their individuality, passion and love of the Mustang,” said Jim Farley, Ford Group Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Mustang created the segment and remains America’s number one muscle car delivering a fast, fun and affordable car that personifies the freedom of the open road.”

Adding to the 45th anniversary celebration will be an epic Mustang convoy road-trip from the west that will travel across America’s heartland bringing Mustangs from all over the United States to attend the big event in Birmingham. The convoy – which will begin in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 11 – is expected to grow to 500 cars from all over the country. The final day’s drive is expected to nearly double in size with people from the entire eastern seaboard joining in.

“For an enthusiast, driving their Mustang across the country with hundreds of others is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Sam Haymart, president of Mustangs Across America, Inc. “There is nothing quite like the magic and camaraderie that grows from the event. It really captures the American spirit that has made this country great.”

Steven McCarley, president of the 11,000-member Mustang Club of America, says the 45th anniversary festivities are expected to draw Mustang fans from all over the world.

“We have people coming in from 15 foreign countries, including Australia, Denmark and France,” he said. “And some of them may be bringing their cars with them.”

Also in attendance will be nine original owners of the 1964½ Mustang and their historic pony cars.

“I can hardly believe my sweet car is 45 years old,” said Laki Malamatenios, one of the original 1964½ owners from Grass Valley, Calif. “I remember when I first bought it, people used to stop me all the time and ask what kind of a ‘Ferrari’ I had, and I used to say, ‘This isn’t a horse, it’s a pony.’”

A celebration of events
A number of events are planned for the four-day celebration, including Mustang shows and open track events:

On Thursday night, 650 Mustangs will cruise in line from the Barber Motor Sports Park to Homewood, Ala., a small city 10 to 15 miles outside of Birmingham, for a street party complete with food and live entertainment.

More than 2,500 Mustangs from 1964 to the 2010 model year will be on display throughout the weekend, and their owners will be hand to answer questions about their cherished cars.

The Ford Racing Mustang Challenge – a professional racing series co-developed and launched last year by Ford Racing and Miller Motorsports Park – will take place on Saturday and Sunday, with at least 25 Mustangs racing each day.

Ford Racing will offer installation of Ford Racing performance upgrades for late model Mustangs in an on-site "Mustang Garage” throughout the weekend.

Professional road racers – including four-time Mustang champion and SPEED TV personality Tommy Kendall – will be on site to provide hot laps for lucky attendees around the Barber park in Mustang FR500S race cars.

World champion drifter Vaughn Gittin, Jr., will be on hand all weekend to give demonstrations and rides.

Hundreds of Mustang owners also will be given the opportunity to experience firsthand the excitement of driving their own cars around the racetrack in organized open track run sessions.

“Many people are curious to see what it’s like on the other side of the fence,” said McCarley. “The racetrack makes a great background for pictures, so we’ll have photographers capturing the cars as they’re on the track.”

McCarley says it promises to be a weekend to remember.

“Mustang is the glue that bonds all of us together,” he said. “Whether you’re a casual observer interested in seeing the latest model Mustang or a true fanatic who eats, sleeps and breathes Mustang, this is where you want to be to celebrate the 45th anniversary.”

Ford Motor Company is giving consumers the opportunity to get in touch with their ‘Mustang side’ through “The ‘10 Unleashed” campaign, part of its new 2010 Ford Mustang launch.

Through Aug. 15, consumers will have the opportunity of living out their ultimate experience behind the wheel of a 2010 Ford Mustang – whether drifting in Japan like world champion Vaughn Gittin, Jr. or customizing a new Mustang using Ford Racing Performance Parts.

“During its 45 years, Mustang has touched people’s lives in so many different ways, and we’ve enjoyed hearing those stories leading up to the introduction of the new 2010 Mustang,” said Allison Revier, Ford Mustang brand manager. “Now, it’s time to look forward and create new stories to fill the next chapter in the history book of America’s favorite muscle car.”

Consumers are asked to submit their own Mustang dream experience in 250 words or less via Ford’s “The ‘10 Unleashed” site at www.the2010mustang.com. Written submissions will be judged based on creativity, uniqueness and execution of idea. Winning submissions will be selected every few weeks, and winners will be able to turn their Mustang experience into reality.

In all, Ford will have 10 once-in-a-lifetime experiences, some created by Ford and some created by consumers. Ford X-Road Debuts at AutoRAI in The Netherlands

Ford has introduced a new wagon for the Dutch market this week. The new Ford Focus X-Road made its debut at AutoRAI in Amsterdam as a 300 unit limited edition.

Ford's new Focus comes with a 1.8-liter 16v engine, that produces 125 hp. The car can run on both petrol and bio-ethanol. Emissions are low enough to fit the vehicle in energy band B.

The vehicle comes with a black bodykit to differentiate it from the Ford Focus Wagon Titanium. Front and rear bumpers are in black, as are the lower portions of the doors and side panels. This black finish is meant to make the vehicle look "sturdy and robust" by giving the car an "off-road look." The car comes with black roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a metallic Moondust Silver paint job. Dual-zone climate control, heated rain-sensing windshield, power windows, cruise control, CD audio system with auxiliary jack, and sport seats are included. For €500 more, customers can purchase the Business Pack, which includes a five-inch color display, navigation system, USB connector, Bluetooth, and voice control.

Available from mid-July, the new Ford Focus X-Road will be available in the Netherlands from €25,175, including VAT and BPM.

New Ford Focus Mule First Spy Photos

Automotive spies have caught the upcoming Ford Focus while it was out cold weather testing in northern Sweden. Two different mules were spotted by the spy cameras, a sedan and a wagon. Strangely the sedan looks like it's riding higher than normal sedans.

At this early stage in its development the car is just a powertrain and chassis mule but it does give a small idea as to the design direction Ford may be going. It is suspected that theIosis Max concept recently unveiled in Geneva is a source of inspiration for some of the upcoming Focus' design cues, particularly in MPV form like the concept.

The third generation Ford Focus is expected to hit the showroom floors in late 2010 based on the car's current 6 year production life cycle. Ford assembles the Focus at different locations around the world and in 2007 the Australian Industry Minister Ian MacFarlane said Australia would begin its manufacture in 2011. Some reports contradict this by claiming it will debut simultaneously in North America, Asia and Europe in 2010.

Past generation models have come in various shapes such as sedan, hatchback, coupe convertible and three-door hatch. The next-generation global car will be be modified as an EV for the American market in order to accommodate batteries. That US version, to be called the Focus RV, should be able to travel about 160km (99 miles) without a recharge. The RV will begin selling in 2011.

DEARBORN, Mich., March 26, 2009 – The arrival today on U.S. shores of 100 new Ford Fiestas marks an important step in the rollout of the first of Ford Motor Company’s new generation of global small cars.

The European-built Fiestas arrived today at seaports in Baltimore and Oxnard, Calif., and will be loaned for six months to 100 young trendsetters chosen from more than 3,300 applicants as part of the “Fiesta Movement.” Those picked to drive the European Fiesta will share their experiences online through social media sites such as Facebook, Flickr and YouTube to build buzz and anticipation for the vehicle’s North American launch early next year.

The Fiesta already is a hit in Europe and Asia, where it went on sale last year and earlier this year, respectively. The new Fiesta already is the second-best selling vehicle of any make across Ford's 19 major European markets, and is headed for its best month yet in Europe in March. Early response from buyers in China and other Asia-Pacific markets already is outstripping company expectations.

“In the midst of the toughest economy many of us have ever seen, the Fiesta is becoming a legitimate global success story,” said Jim Farley, Ford Group Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “The Fiesta Movement is all about introducing a new kind of small car to a new generation of buyers.”

The 100 five-door Fiestas coming to the U.S. were built at Ford’s Cologne Assembly Plant in Europe. For many U.S. customers, it will be their first chance to see and read about the small car that is one of three finalists for the World Car of the Year award that will be announced next month at the New York International Auto Show.

“We’re really excited to be able to get our U.S. customers behind the wheel and experience this car,” said Sam De La Garza, small car marketing manager. “It’s all part of a plan to build excitement about the new Fiesta with the next generation of Ford customers.”

Designed and developed as Ford’s first global car, the Fiesta takes the nameplate’s three-decade heritage to a new level with its eye-catching kinetic design, widely acclaimed driving dynamics and unexpected refinement.

Before coming to the U.S., special permission was granted by the EPA and the European-spec vehicles were modified for American drivers.

The language in the vehicles’ instrument panel message center was changed from German to English and the speedometers were changed from kilometers to miles per hour. The voice piping from the Bluetooth-enabled vehicle, however, retains its British accent. All the Fiesta Movement vehicles feature keyless entry with push-button start, EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System, 16” or 17” wheels, and many other features typically found on larger or premium vehicles.

Agents on a mission
Beginning in late spring, the chosen participants, or “Fiesta Movement” agents, will be asked to complete monthly missions in their vehicles, capture their experiences digitally and share them with Ford and others through social networks.

Ford is aiming the Fiesta Movement at Millennials, the next-generation consumer group born between 1979 and 1985 that will total 70 million new drivers in 2010 – the largest class of any generation. Making up 28 percent of the driving age population, the potential size of the market serves as an opportunity for Ford to connect with a group that hasn’t yet established brand loyalty and is very connected to the use of technology and social networking.

For Millennials, social media is a part of everyday life. Statistics show that for those born after 1980, 62 percent of the content they consume comes from someone they know personally. The missions will be designed based on monthly themes that will take them to new places, to meet new people and to experience new things in their Fiesta.

Collecting data about how the car performs in the U.S. market is an integral part to the vehicle’s launch. With this program, Ford aims to gather valuable customer input on how they perceive the vehicle prior to the next year’s North American launch. Ford Motor Company will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Mustang by auctioning the first retail 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 and a pair of Mustang GT concept cars during the 7th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector Car Auction on April 9-11, 2009. The three historic Mustangs will be sold for charity and are among 400-plus collector vehicles to be auctioned at No Reserve during the automotive lifestyle event at the Americraft Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds. SPEED will provide live, high-definition TV coverage of the auction once again.

"It's rare for a concept vehicle, especially one as iconic as the Ford Mustang, to be sold to the public," said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. BRENTWOOD, March 12, 2009 - Performance upgrades for the latest Ford Fiesta 1.6-litre petrol-engined models have been developed by Mountune Performance and are offered through selected Ford dealers.

The Mountune Performance Upgrade for 1.6-litre versions of the new-look Fiesta Zetec-S and Titanium models costs £1,299 (plus fitting), and consists of a high-flow air induction system, a high performance exhaust including high-flow catalyst and tubular manifold, and re-calibration of Ford's 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT engine.

The result takes the target power output to 140PS at 6,750rpm and 170NM of torque at 4,250rpm, compared to 120PS and 152NM for the standard engine. As a result, 0-60mph acceleration time is reduced to 7.9 seconds from the standard engine's 9.9 seconds.

The new dealer-fit Fiesta performance kit follows similar Mountune Performance Upgrades for the popular Focus ST and Fiesta ST models which were made available from the beginning of 2008.
All kits are fully approved by Ford and have been tested and verified on a wide range of British roads as well as numerous laps of the famous Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

Developed by Mountune Performance in association with Ford Team RS, this upgrade package will only be available at selected specialist Ford dealers in Britain from March 2009. The upgrades carry a minimum of 12 months/12,000-mile dealer warranty and do not affect the original vehicle warranty.

AutoWeek spring break: The Mustang gets noticed in Panama City

We made it. At 10 p.m. Thursday, the population of Panama City, Fla., increased by two college students and one 2010 Mustang GT convertible.

And the town has noticed. Well, at least it's noticed the car.

"Dude, that's a new Mustang," someone yells as we drive down Front Beach Road. A girl beside him calls out, too, and his friend adds, "Yeah, a 2010."

Photographer Andrew Trahan and I spent Thursday evening cruising down the 16-mile stretch of beachside road that is swamped by souvenir shops, mini-golf courses, nightclubs and, yes, drunken partygoers.

"Light 'em up," someone yells as we pass by a bar.

There is no way to hide in our 2010 Mustang, a vehicle yet to be released to the public. But who doesn't want to make a splash at spring break? The ladies wish they were in the back and the guys wish they were us. At least, that's what we keep telling ourselves.

But we aren't just turning heads in Panama City. We left Cincinnati at 9:30 a.m., and throughout the next 12 hours en route to Panama City, we were given the thumbs up, happy honks and countless offers to "drag" away from stoplights. Most of these came after our external-temp reading hit 65 degrees and we let the top down in Alabaster, Ala. Sixty-five was like heaven on a trip that had seen sleet, snow, rain and the low 30s for most of its duration.

Thursday's leg was long, but the Mustang's Sync technology kept us occupied. We plugged our iPhone and iPod into the car, and after a good three hours, we figured out how to request artists and change songs through the speakers.

Ford to Unveil Tri-Fuel Mondeo that runs on Gas, Ethanol and LPG at 2009 Leipzig Show

At the AMI Leipzig Motor Show in Germany that runs from March 28 to April 5, 2009, Ford will pull the covers off a new tri-fuel variant of the Mondeo capable of running on gasoline, bio-ethanol (E85) or any mix of these two, as well as on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Available in four-door sedan, five-door liftback and in station wagon forms, the tri-fuel Mondeo uses a 2.0-liter Duratec petrol engine and comes equipped with two gas tanks, one with a volume of 70-liters for petrol and E85 and one with 48.8 liters (40 for the Estate) for LPG.

According to Ford, the 2.0-liter Duratec engine produces an output of 145HP when running on petrol and/or E85, and 141HP on LPG. With LPG, the Mondeo Sedan and Liftback models can cover an estimated total of 460 km (286 miles) while the Estate, 380 km (236 miles), before running dry. When running on conventional fuel and/or E85, the Mondeo has a range of 850 km (529 miles), meaning that the combined range is over 1,200 km (746 miles).

Ford said that its tri-fuel Mondeo cars will go on sale in selected European markets from April with prices starting in Germany from €27,500 ($35,150 with today's rates). This means that the tri-fuel Mondeo is €250 cheaper than the comparable diesel-powered, Mondeo 2.0-liter TDCi 140HP.

FORD BUILDS ON ELECTRIC POWER STEERING TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE DRIVE QUALITY, ENABLE MORE FEATURES

DEARBORN, Mich., March 12, 2009 – Ford Motor Company is taking full advantage of the fuel economy, performance and reliability benefits associated with Electric Power Steering (EPS) on a variety of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products, but the company isn’t stopping there.

Customers already behind the wheel of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner, one of Ford’s first products to sport EPS, also are enjoying other clever – yet subtle – steering characteristics that enhance drive quality.

One such EPS-enabled feature, pull-drift compensation, is a software-based technology that helps drivers offset vehicle pulling or drifting that can occur in steady crosswinds or on uneven roads.

“Pull and drift are major customer annoyances that have been difficult to completely eliminate because of multiple factors that contribute to this phenomenon,” said Ali Jammoul, Ford’s chief engineer for Chassis Engineering and Steering Systems. “Ford’s innovative pull-drift technology compensates to provide driving comfort straight down the road, even in steady crosswinds and on banked and uneven roads.”

Customer complaints about a “constant pull or drift to one side” or “steering that requires extra uneven effort” historically have been a source of customer dissatisfaction in steering, ride and handling in quality studies. Ford’s EPS with drift-pull compensation is projected to improve customer satisfaction in these areas by up to 50 percent.

The 2008 Escape, one of the first vehicles to showcase EPS with pull-drift technology in North America, substantiated this projected improvement, cutting the number of customer complaints associated with steering in half.

How It Works
EPS is a sophisticated system that uses sensors to constantly measure the wheel torque applied by the driver to maintain the vehicle’s path; continually resetting to adapt to changing road conditions or the vehicle turning a corner.

Ford’s pull-drift software technology gives the EPS system the added ability to compensate for slight steering torque changes caused by environmental factors such as road crowning or steady crosswinds.

“If you’re on the expressway and the road is crowned to the left or right for better water drainage, for example, you may need to make a slight steering compensation for that crowning,” said Brian Kosztowny, a Ford product development engineer in Vehicle Dynamics. “With pull-drift compensation, the EPS system gradually will dial in torque for easier steering in these conditions without the driver feeling it in his or her fingers or needing to make an extra effort. The electric motor does more, so you don’t have to.”

Ford’s application of this technology only corrects for road and environmental conditions within reason, adding slight torque up to a proprietary set limit so inherent steering issues are not masked. In addition, Ford has fine-tuned the software-based technology so it can be adapted to fit driving characteristics of individual products, whether it’s a luxury sedan or a sporty compact SUV.

EPS Delivers More
Ford’s early adoption of the pull-drift software technology demonstrates how EPS combined with invisible software algorithms can deliver tangible results in terms of improving drive quality and the ownership experience for customers.

Ford continues to dig deep, taking full advantage of the big-ticket – as well as the more understated – benefits of EPS, offering them on entry-level as well as high-end products.

Ford’s Active Park Assist – which debuts on several 2010 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles – is, in fact, enabled by EPS. This sophisticated technology uses EPS and an ultrasonic-based sensing system to position a vehicle for parallel parking, calculating the optimal vehicle angle and carefully steering the vehicle into a parking spot.

EPS also can be programmed to communicate with a vehicle’s camera, opening the door for Ford to introduce lane-assist and accident avoidance systems such as lane departure warning systems.

“EPS gives us more warning options for these advanced systems,” adds Darrel Recker, Ford’s EPS supervisor. “With EPS, we can consider more tactile versus visual warning mechanisms, such as a vibration in the steering wheel, and we don’t have to add a lot of components or additional hardware to make it happen.”

EPS has the potential to add steering features for comfort and personalization. Ford currently is examining how to calibrate the system so that customers can select their desired steering effort. Drivers that prefer a sportier ride, for instance, would choose a higher steering effort than someone who prefers a more luxury-car feel.

Steering the Way
EPS continues to gain momentum in North America, with Ford acting as a major player in adapting this efficient technology across nearly 90 percent of its lineup by 2012. For 2010, the all-new Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKT include EPS.

Ford’s aggressive migration of EPS represents up to a 5-percent gain in fuel economy for each product application and CO2 emissions savings of approximately 3.5 percent because the system operates on demand. EPS also equates to less maintenance for customers since it is completely free of the complicated mix of hydraulic pumps, hoses, power steering fluids and drive belts that can require regular service and repair.

“As we use advanced technology such as electric power steering to improve fuel efficiency across our vehicle lineup, we have the opportunity to introduce new innovations such as pull-drift compensation and Active Park Assist,” said Ford’s Jammoul. “We are applying these technologies not for the sake of technology, but because they meet the needs and wants of our customers.”

Ring & Ride provides a free door-to-door, minibus service for people of all ages who find it difficult to use ordinary public transport. Ring & Ride also undertake many trips to and from schools for children with disabilities, and has over the years become a regular sight on the region's roads.

The 9,500 users of the Ring & Ride service will now enjoy more comfort and convenience with electronic tail lifts, folding steps and up to four wheelchair passengers travelling at the same time. The Ring & Ride fleet has 316 adapted vehicles available to its customers.

Ford launched the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids five years ago and the vehicles remain the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the market. At the same time as workers at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant celebrated the hybrid milestone, Ford dealers are preparing to begin selling the all-new 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids, which will be America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedans.

Today, the Ford Escape Hybrid SUV and Mercury Mariner Hybrid SUV deliver 34 mpg city driving, 31 mpg highway. The newest entries to Ford’s hybrid lineup, the Fusion Hybrid and Milan Hybrid deliver 41 mpg city driving, 36 mpg highway, the most fuel-efficient midsize sedans on the market today.

The Kansas City Assembly Plant, which employs 4,100 people, has been the hub for Ford’s hybrid SUV production since 2004 when the first Ford Escape Hybrid rolled off the line. Lean, flexible manufacturing processes and specially-trained employees at the plant allow the hybrids to be built on the same production line as conventional Escape and Mariner SUVs.

“All of us at the plant feel tremendous pride as we celebrate this important milestone,” said
Ken Ward, Kansas City plant manager. “We are as enthusiastic about building the 100,000th vehicle today as we were at the initial launch.

Jeff Wright, president of UAW Local 249 at the Kansas City plant also was at the plant when
the first Escape Hybrid was built.

A Look Back at the Ford Escape Hybrid
In 2004, Ford introduced the world to the first hybrid SUV – the Ford Escape Hybrid – by taking a record-breaking trek through the congested streets of Manhattan, where the vehicle exceeded all expectations, driving 37 straight hours and 576 miles on a single tank of gas.

The Escape Hybrid made history again in 2005 when it became the first hybrid vehicle to be used as a taxi in the U.S. The Escape Hybrid taxis were first introduced in San Francisco, and soon after, in New York City. There are now 250 Escape Hybrids providing taxi service in San Francisco and 1,400 in New York City.

This month, a San Francisco Escape Hybrid cab fleet accumulated 300,000 miles with no major mechanical problems. It is a true demonstration of the durability and reliability of the vehicles. Compared with conventional cabs, those 300,000 “hybrid” miles translate into a savings of approximately 5,000 gallons of gas or 100,000 pounds of carbon emissions.

From the streets of New York and San Francisco to the sandy beaches of Southern California, the Ford Escape Hybrid has proven to be the green vehicle of choice for a variety of users. Currently, a fleet of 45 customized Escape Hybrids serve as rescue vehicles for the Los Angeles County Ocean Lifeguards along 72 miles of California coastline.

After almost a year of rescue patrol, Mike Frazer, chief of Lifeguard Services, Los Angeles County Fire Department, says the lifeguards’ appreciation of the Escape Hybrids continues to grow, especially now in difficult economic times.

“Our fuel consumption and costs have gone down dramatically. The money we are saving on fuel has allowed us to maintain our critical front line staffing despite the economic downturn. We also are saving money on vehicle maintenance,” he explained. “It is not a stretch to say that our new fleet of Ford Escape Hybrids is allowing more lifeguards to staff towers and in essence, helping us saving lives.”

Green Inside and Out:
The interior of the Escape Hybrid features earth-friendly cloth seat fabric made from post-industrial materials – polyester fibers that would have ended up in landfills otherwise.
The cushions also are made from a bio-based polyurethane foam derived from the oils of various plant seeds such as soybeans.

model delivers even more style, comfort and features, making it an ideal choice for a family activity weekend, or a working week."

Contemporary and sporty new exterior and interior design details make new Ranger a credible lifestyle choice, while its versatility and 'tough truck' underpinnings make it a robust and reliable work partner.

Built in Thailand, the new model will arrive in European Ford showrooms from April and is available in a comprehensive choice of model series, from the entry-level XL to the range-topping Wildtrak.

Bold New Ranger Face and Profile

In design terms, the new front styling gives Ranger a sleeker, more modern look, but also shows it means business.

A large horizontal three-bar grille dominates, and is proudly embossed with RANGER lettering. Two black vertical nostrils either side of the grille plus the extended opening below the bumperline and large headlamps that wrap around each front corner create an instantly recognisable design statement. The lower bumper fascia also includes integrated foglamps.

New Ranger's tough contemporary style is supported by solid, modern engineering. The sweeping, tapered front is more aerodynamic and sweeps rearward at its edges to incorporate Ranger's bold front wheel arches. This key design detail communicates Ranger's solid, confident stance and grippy handling character, whether in 4x2 or 4x4 configuration.

Design features influenced by extensive wind tunnel testing also include the door mirrors. Increased in size for better visibility, the mirror's shape - incorporating the LED turn indicator on Wildtrak - was specifically designed to reduce air turbulence and wind noise.

Ranger is available in three body styles - Single Cab, RAP (Rear Access Panel) Cab and Double Cab. The RAP Cab is a four-door system to provide freer access to the cabin by featuring two forward-hinged doors and two rear-hinged access panels. An innovation first introduced to Ranger in 2002, the RAP Cab provides unobstructed access to the spacious interior for ease of entry and cargo loading and an uncompromised side-impact safety structure that replaces the centre pillar of a traditional double cab. In addition a Chassis Cab version is available on both the
single Cab and RAP Cab.

Contemporary Details

A new black vent at the trailing edge of the front wings is one of the key styling signatures. The vent features detailed recessed meshwork which surrounds a chrome Ranger badge on Wildtrak models or the side-indicator repeater.

Ranger's large door mirrors incorporate feature details to reflect the series choice. The mirror is moulded in black on the XL, finished with a body colour cap for Ranger XLT models and a chrome-finished cap for Ranger Limited and Wildtrak. The door mirrors on Wildtrak feature a high-intensity LED integral turn indicator. Mirrors pivot for tight clearance areas and all series now benefit from electrically heated mirrors for improved visibility.

Rear bumper finishes give further opportunity to reflect model series, so treatments progress from black on the XL to chrome on the higher series with Park Distance Control additionally featuring on the Limited and Wildtrak models.

Ranger is offered with ten high quality exterior paint choices, five of which are new: Highland Green, Wining Blue, Lagoon Blue, Copper Red and Desert Bronze.

New Ranger also debuts a clear tail lamp design - another contemporary cue - that visually unites the smooth tailgate to the sculpted box side. The clear tail lamps further emphasise the reality of car-like styling and features available in Ford's pick-up range.

Style, Space, Craftsmanship and Comfort

Despite its tough load lugging and off-road capabilities, the new Ranger's interior offers car-like comfort and low noise levels, thanks to ergonomically crafted seats, climate control and MP3-compatible audio and a bodyshell engineered to isolate road noise from the cabin.

"Minimising NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) in all of our products is a key target for us," says Nenzen. "Ranger is no exception to this and the new model is more comfortable than ever."

All Ranger models offer AM/FM radio and an MP3-compatible CD player as standard. The audio unit features a digital display that incorporates a clock function.

The lower centre console features two integral 12-volt power outlets and - on all models except the entry level XL - an additional AUX input connection for popular audio players, such as an iPod.
Ranger also offers an array of clever stowage solutions, including a centre stack sunglass binnacle, a front door stowage bin capable of accommodating a half-litre bottle and a pull-out sliding tray above the glove compartment.

Extending the width of the passenger side of the dashboard, the slideout tray supports a weight of 10 kilograms and is ideal for use as a work surface for writing or map reading.
Ranger's large centre console features a two-level design. Its top bin is ideal for accommodating smaller items such as a mobile phone, while its lower bin can house larger objects, including up to 10 CD cases.

Power window and mirror controls are a standard feature in all four Ranger series. The driver's window has a one-touch down feature and the switch is backlit for better night visibility.
Single cab models feature seating for two, the RAP Cab seats four and the Double Cab seats five. The rear seats in the RAP Cab can be folded up to provide secure storage in the cab rather than using the rear load space.

"The high performance air conditioning system, comprehensive audio features and red illumination of the instrument panel coupled with its bold and updated exterior styling make Ranger a very inviting place to be," said Henrik Nenzen, "It is also the perfect crossover for business-owners and an increasing number of urban drivers seeking a stylish vehicle that reflects and supports their lifestyle choices."

Ranger Power and Capability

The new Ford Ranger continues to offer a comprehensive choice of engines, transmissions and drivetrain configurations to meet all customer needs.

Two versions of Ford's Duratorq TDCi turbo diesel engine lead the powertrain line-up. These responsive common-rail diesel engines are available in either 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre versions.
The diesel engines are available in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations and can be paired with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.

The 143PS (105kW) 2.5-litre engine is rated at 330Nm and has CO2 emission figures of 227 g/km and 244 g/km respectively in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations and regular cab bodystyle. Using the EC combined fuel consumption cycle the 4x2 regular cab bodystyle travels 100 km using 8.3 litres of fuel and the 4x4 uses 8.9 litres.*

The 156PS (115kW) 3.0-litre version generates 380Nm at the flat peak of its torque curve

"Importantly for all of our customers both TDCi engines produce their maximum torque from just 1,800 rpm," explains Nenzen. "This makes Ranger ideal for great on-road performance or for hauling and towing with its class leading 3,000kg braked trailer loads."

The Ranger 4x4 is designed for superior ground clearance and river fording capability. Its approach and departure angles are designed to provide off-road clearance.

"The new iosis MAX concept car marks another important step in the renaissance of Ford of Europe's product design under the leadership of Martin Smith.

The two previous iosis concepts were significant milestones in that process. They helped to introduce our new design strategy, and to show how kinetic design would play a key role in transforming our future product line.

The fantastic reception given to our latest models - from the Mondeo and Kuga, through to the Fiesta and Ka - suggests that we've been getting our strategy right.

The iosis MAX is an exciting third addition to the iosis concept car series.

While it is a bespoke concept and doesn't preview a specific production model,
iosis MAX does provide a tempting glimpse into the design direction and efficient powertrain technologies being adopted for the next generation of Ford's global medium car range.

Presenting such a bold concept car during the current economic climate highlights the confidence within Ford of Europe about the company's design philosophy and the strength of our current - and future - product line-up.

The iosis MAX sends a powerful signal that there are more stylish and desirable Ford products just around the corner.

1.2 iosis MAX highlights

Ford is unveiling the third in its series of exciting iosis ‘kinetic design' bespoke concept cars at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. iosis MAX is a concept study for the next generation of Ford's compact multi-activity vehicle (MAV) as well as a glimpse at the design direction Martin Smith and his team are taking for the company's next generation global C-car family.

The iosis MAX features striking exterior and interior designs based on a fresh interpretation of Ford's kinetic design form language. It is a dynamic MAV and showcases new levels of efficiency and flexibility.

The car's dramatic looks are complemented by innovative solutions which enhance its practicality and environmental performance. These include new door opening concepts, lightweight materials, advanced aerodynamics, and a preview of the European development of Ford's global EcoBoost petrol engine technology coming in 2010.

Coupled to this clean and lean engine are the recently introduced and acclaimed Ford PowerShift transmission, plus a new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system due for production
in 2010.

"The iosis MAX marks the next stage in the evolution of kinetic design, and showcases a number of affordable petrol engine technologies that will make a difference to the environment and our customers' pockets," says Martin Smith, Ford of Europe's Executive Design Director.

"Our designers have stretched themselves beyond the two previous iosis concepts, and have applied kinetic design form language to a MAV format vehicle," adds Smith. "The iosis MAX proves that cars in the compact MAV class can have emotive, dynamic styling without sacrificing their traditional virtues of practicality or efficiency - something that the larger and revolutionary S-MAX has already demonstrated."

"Although the iosis MAX isn't a forerunner to a specific production vehicle, it clearly highlights how kinetic design is evolving and can be applied with stunning results to all vehicles in the Ford portfolio."

Exciting, dynamic design
Like all kinetic design vehicles, the exciting shape of the iosis MAX conveys ‘energy in motion' through its athletic stance and muscular surfacing.

The design team also sought to create a strong impression of lightness and efficiency. This was achieved through the concept's sleek, sporting and aerodynamic profile, which provides a clear contrast to the more boxy approach adopted by many vehicles in the compact MAV segment.

The feeling of lightness is reinforced by the extensive use of glass in the vehicle, with the steeply raked front screen flowing back in one piece to the tailgate, revealing the skeletal roof structure underneath.

The visual excitement of the concept's exterior is also transferred to its interior design. The cabin extends some of the kinetic design themes with complex shapes and graphic forms which complement the expressive style used on the outside of the vehicle.

Advanced materials are combined with innovative solutions like the ‘floating' seat design to create an overwhelming feeling of space and lightness for the occupants.

New style for Compact MAVs
The primary objective for the iosis MAX exterior design team was to create an exciting new style for compact MAV format vehicles by applying kinetic design principles.

"We were convinced that we could use our kinetic design form language to develop a
C-segment MAV that was sporty, dynamic and desirable," explains Stefan Lamm, Ford of Europe's chief exterior designer. "The iosis MAX takes the core kinetic design elements and extends them to a new level, with a totally fresh execution which is not only stylish and innovative, but functional too."

The front of the iosis MAX is dominated by the bold trapezoidal lower grille, which is now a key part of the Ford brand identity. For the first time, however, the grille features a distinctive new treatment with three horizontal chrome-rimmed bars, giving the vehicle's face a more dynamic and imposing feel.

The dynamic character of the design is reinforced by the coupé-like side profile, with its striking new window line shape - the daylight opening graphic - and rakish C-pillar design.

The C-pillars, with their highly original ‘flying buttress' design, also deliver significant functional benefits. The pillars act as spoilers, channelling airflow as close as possible to the tailgate glass for optimum aerodynamic efficiency.

The pillars work in combination with the dramatic looking aerodynamic spoiler which is centrally mounted at the rear of the roof structure, with its wings cantilevered above the tailgate glass.

Imaginative details catch the eye all around the vehicle, including the striking new graphics for the front and rear lamps, stylish LED lighting strips in the rocker panels, and stunning 19-inch alloy wheels with a lightweight two-piece construction.

Dramatic interior environment
The iosis MAX interior presents a bold evolution of the kinetic design language used on the exterior, incorporating dynamic shapes and advanced materials to create a dramatic interior environment which is light, spacious and expressive.

"The iosis MAX shows how affordable family vehicles can have interiors which are practical and comfortable, yet still highly desirable," says Ernst Reim, Ford of Europe's chief interior designer. "Our vision looks beyond normal automotive processes, taking inspiration from modernist architecture, lightweight construction technologies and even the sporting world."

The cabin design features strong dynamic lines, very expressive surfaces and an inherent sense of lightness. The instrument panel is a key element, having a slim, muscular shape which ‘reaches out' to the body sides, suspended above the floor like a gymnast gripping rings.

At each end of the panel, grab handles spiral down into the doors, creating the impression of a vortex spinning from an aircraft wing tip.

The innovative use of shapes and materials is also reflected in the centre console, which has a smooth plexiglass surface which rolls down from the instrument panel like a ribbon and flows through to the rear of the passenger compartment.

The whole of the console surface acts as a touch-screen display to control the vehicle's infotainment systems, similar to the approach used on the latest mobile phones.

The lower console is supported on a spine-like bridge which runs the full length of the interior from the bulkhead through to the load area. The four individual seats are also cantilevered from the bridge, allowing for a completely uninterrupted floor and giving occupants the sensation that they are ‘floating on air'.

To reinforce the impression of space and lightness the seats themselves are constructed from a stylish lightweight carbon fibre skeleton, with inner panels constructed from nylon mesh inserts.

Warm luminous colour palette
Warm luminous grey hues were selected for the iosis MAX interior, complementing the striking pearlescent 'Limelight' colour of the exterior, while at the same time creating a spacious and airy ambience. However, small details are picked out in bright cadmium yellow to add visual impact and stress the dynamic character of the shapes and graphics.

Although the interior has advanced lightweight materials, imaginative use of textures and surface finishes allows many of the parts to combine a technical feel with more sensual natural characteristics.
"For the iosis MAX we wanted to achieve a more futuristic interpretation of kinetic design through a creative blend of lightweight materials and sophisticated textures and colours," says Ruth Pauli, chief designer for colour and materials, Ford of Europe. "The contrast between different materials and the use of subtle three-dimensional effects help to create a unique interior environment."

An example of the original approach used in the iosis MAX is the special geometric surface texture used to emphasise the taut, muscular shape of the instrument panel. The geometric elements are stretched and distorted to reflect the panel's complex form, highlighting the tension in the design.

Innovation delivers increased practicality
The iosis MAX also explores innovative solutions which could provide future MAV vehicles with increased practicality and flexibility.

These ideas were conceived by a team led by Patrick Verhée, Ford of Europe design innovation and show-car manager, who oversaw the development of the concept vehicle.

To help overcome common problems faced by owners when loading or unloading the vehicle in a confined space, such as a congested multi-storey car park, the concept features a unique two piece tailgate design. This allows the tailgate to be fully opened, even when there is restricted space behind or above the vehicle.
To provide even greater loading flexibility the iosis MAX utilises a B-pillarless construction, providing a wide, unobstructed load aperture when both front and rear side doors are open. In combination with the ‘floating' seat design, this enables awkward, bulky items - such as flat pack furniture - to be slid easily onto the floor of the cabin or the folded seat backs.

The stylish LED lighting strip in the rocker panels provides additional illumination to assist safe entry to and exit from the side of the vehicle.

New opening kinematics are also utilised in the dual-function hood design, which incorporates an active hood system for improved pedestrian protection in combination with greatly enhanced access to the engine compartment.

Responsive yet environmentally friendly
The innovation featured in the iosis MAX extends to its powertrain, which showcases efficient technologies coming in future Ford vehicles to demonstrate how reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be achieved without compromising dynamic performance.

Power is provided by a 1.6-litre 180 PS 4-cylinder petrol engine from Ford's new EcoBoost engine family. Ford EcoBoost engines feature turbocharging and direct injection technology to deliver fuel economy up to 20 per cent better than conventional petrol engines with a similar power output.

EcoBoost engines will be progressively introduced to Ford's European product range from early 2010.

The 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit in the iosis MAX is further optimised through the use of a new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, intelligent alternator and six-speed Ford PowerShift double-clutch automated manual gearbox with ratios tailored to deliver maximum fuel efficiency. Simulations predict that the concept vehicle could achieve CO2 emissions
of 125 g/km.

The concept's environmental sustainability is enhanced by the use of lightweight materials and through careful attention to its aerodynamic design; the body's optimised shape and details including the ‘flying buttress' rear door pillars, advanced rear wing design, rear diffuser, narrow tyres and active front cooling ducts which are blanked off when not required.

"We're eager to hear reaction to the iosis MAX as the design team has worked hard to incorporate so many interesting ideas, features and materials that could find their way into future Ford vehicles," says John Fleming, Ford of Europe's Chairman and CEO. "The car also signals the arrival of an exciting new range of environmentally friendly Ford EcoBoost petrol engines which use the same efficient principles already making an impact on our larger North American models.

"The next eighteen months will see some exciting new models with clean and affordable technologies arriving in the Ford of Europe range," Fleming adds. "When we say 'Feel the Difference', our European customers will know we mean it!"

1.3 The iosis story

The first iosis concept car was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2005, its name hinting at how a dynamic new form language, called 'kinetic design' would define the design direction for all future Ford of Europe products.

The iosis was an exciting four-seat saloon with a muscular coupé profile. It hinted at the styling of what was to become the new Mondeo in 2007.

A year later, Ford revealed the stunning iosis X concept vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006. The iosis X was a five-door sports-crossover concept, which showed how kinetic design could be applied to different niche segments.

The dramatic iosis X prepared the public for the launch in 2008 of the Ford Kuga crossover vehicle, which has seen considerable success in the market since its introduction, attracting a high proportion of new customers to the brand.

The iosis MAX is the third concept in the iosis series, and makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009. This concept marks the next stage in the evolution of kinetic design, providing an exciting concept study for a new generation of compact multi-activity vehicles and an indication of the design language being adopted for Ford's future range of global C-segment vehicles.

Construction of the iosis MAX Concept was executed in partnership with the specialist coachbuilder Coggiola in Turin.

2.1 Exterior concept

The iosis MAX features a striking exterior design based on a fresh interpretation of Ford's kinetic design form language.

Like all kinetic design vehicles, the iosis MAX conveys ‘energy in motion' through its athletic stance and muscular surfacing. The concept has a sleek, sporting and aerodynamic profile, which provides a clear contrast to the more boxy approach adopted by many vehicles in the compact MAV segment.

Coupé-like side profile
The dynamic character of the design is reinforced by the coupé-like side profile, with its striking new window line shape - the daylight opening (DLO) graphic - and rakish C-pillar design. The bold shape of the DLO graphic is framed by a chrome rim, helping to create a clear visual separation between the passenger compartment and the cargo area.

The C-pillars themselves have a highly original ‘flying buttress' design, enabling them to act as spoilers to channel airflow as close as possible to the tailgate glass for optimum aerodynamic efficiency.

"Using the rear door frame as a form of ‘aero-blade' helps us create a unique style, while also giving important functional benefits," says Stefan Lamm. "Details like this enable us to demonstrate that MAV vehicles can be more emotional and dynamic without losing their functional qualities."

The C-pillars work in combination with the aerodynamic spoiler that is centrally mounted at the rear of the roof structure. This spoiler has wings that are cantilevered above the tailgate, creating a sharp aerodynamic cut-off point without disturbing the panoramic effect of the wraparound glass tailgate.

Innovative use of glazing
The innovative use of glazing is a key theme in the iosis MAX, helping to reinforce the feeling of lightness and efficiency.

The concept has a steeply raked front screen which flows back in one piece to the tailgate. The glass reveals the dynamic shape of the skeletal roof structure underneath its surface.

There is an uninterrupted flow of glass at the sides of the vehicle too, as the rear windows continue into the tailgate beneath the ‘floating' door pillar. The tailgate glass is made in one piece, and has a complex three-dimensional wraparound shape.

The emphasis on transparent or translucent materials in the vehicle exterior and interior highlights the concept's constructional lightness, while the colouring of transparent materials reflects the icy shades found in polar regions.

The striking 'Limelight' exterior colour is complemented by the frosted translucent whites and transparent greens of the glass and lamp housings, giving the vehicle an airy and technical personality.

Bold trapezoidal grille
The front of the iosis MAX is dominated by the bold trapezoidal lower grille, which is now a key signature element in Ford's brand identity.

The concept, however, is the first vehicle to feature a distinctive new grille treatment with three horizontal chrome-rimmed bars, giving the vehicle's face a more dynamic and imposing feel.

The lower grille also has a subtle three dimensional effect, as the sculptured, athletic lines of the bonnet flow down into the grille to create a stylish V shape.

Another interesting feature is found in the upper grille, where the dark grille insert carrying the Ford oval is actually created by a continuation of the engine's ‘beauty cover'.

Style with function
At the rear of the vehicle, the designers wanted to preserve the coupé-like design but without compromising its functionality and practicality.

To maintain the attractive appearance, the shut lines for the tailgate were moved out to the corners of the vehicle, resulting in a clean tailgate design with a broad opening aperture. The height of the loading shelf was chosen to provide convenient access, while maintaining the sporting stance of the vehicle.

Beneath the bumper, there is a small aerodynamic diffuser which sits below the exhaust outlet. The outlet is mounted in a broad chrome-rimmed aperture that mimics the chrome grille elements at the front of the vehicle, while emphasising the width of the car.
2.2 Imaginative details

The iosis MAX features a host of eye-catching and imaginative design details, which enhance the concept's functionality and visual appeal.

The striking new shape of the headlamps is complemented by a number of stylish technical features designed to heighten their visual impact. Emphasis is drawn to the powerful main LED projector lights by a thin reflective frame which ‘floats' within the body of the lamp. The iosis MAX logo is also picked out on the bezel of the lamp, adding to the optical effects.

Daytime running lights are provided by a series of angular transparent sections mounted within the light housing. These sections, which have a translucent light blue tint, create the impression of eyelashes that surround the bright LED ‘eyes'.

Additional illumination is provided by thin LED fog lamps which are mounted at each end of the front spoiler. The line of the lights follows the sculptured cut-outs in the lower spoiler, emphasising the feeling of width and adding to the dynamic feel of the front end.

Rather than using bulky wing mirrors, the iosis MAX employs rear view cameras that are mounted in stylish aerodynamic housings.

Innovation is also found in the LED lighting strips which are housed in the rocker panels. As well as highlighting the form of the distinctive wide rocker panels, the LED strips provide additional illumination for extra safety when occupants are using the side doors.

The iosis MAX features stunning lightweight 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, with bold trapezoidal shapes and a striking two-colour finish.

3 Interior Design

The iosis MAX interior presents a bold evolution of the kinetic design language used on the exterior, incorporating dynamic shapes and advanced materials to create a dramatic interior environment which is light, spacious and expressive.

"We wanted to transfer the visual excitement of the iosis MAX exterior into the interior design," explains Ernst Reim, Ford of Europe's chief interior designer. "At the same time, we wanted to demonstrate that a practical, spacious environment can still be stimulating and fun."

In developing their vision, the team looked beyond normal automotive conventions, and took inspiration from a range of sources including modernist architecture, lightweight construction technologies and even the sporting world.

Slim, muscular instrument panel
The instrument panel is a key element, having a slim, muscular form which ‘reaches out' to the body sides, suspended above the floor like a gymnast gripping rings. Its taut, wing-like shape extends out into the ‘wing mirrors', enhancing the feeling of space in the vehicle.

At each end of the panel, grab handles spiral down into the doors, creating the impression of a vortex spinning from an aircraft wing tip. The dynamic shape gives a new dimension to the kinetic design theme of ‘energy in motion', and is repeated in other areas of the interior.

A compact instrument binnacle ‘floats' independently above the instrument panel and is supported by a cantilever arm mounted on the steering column. The cantilever design was inspired by the asymmetric rear swing arm used by many sports motorbikes.

The unique mounting arrangement means that the binnacle moves fore and aft together with the steering wheel, maintaining an optimum view of the instruments through the wheel.

Innovative centre console
The innovative use of shapes and materials is also reflected in the centre console, which has a smooth plexiglass surface that rolls down from the instrument panel like a ribbon and flows through to the rear of the passenger compartment.

The whole of the console surface acts as a touch-screen display to control the vehicle's infotainment systems, like a three-dimensional version of the approach used on the latest touch-screen mobile phones.

Information - such as sat-nav instructions or details of an incoming phone call - is displayed on the console when required using projectors mounted beneath the surface.

A rotary control at the bottom of the console allows the driver to switch between primary functions, while a mouse-like controller in front of the central armrest provides a swift and accurate way to navigate within menus as an alternative to using the touch screens.

Images from the rear-view camera system are presented in a colour display in a separate binnacle at the top of the console.

The concept vision anticipates that minor controls such as indicators or wipers are activated by voice control. An important exception - retained to deliver maximum driver satisfaction - is the manual control paddles for the Ford PowerShift transmission system mounted on the front of the steering wheel.

Spine-like bridge
A key part of the iosis MAX interior concept is the spine-like bridge which runs the full length of the interior from the bulkhead through to the rear load area.

The bridge supports the centre console, and provides a mounting point for the four individual seats and central armrests. The seats are cantilevered from the bridge, allowing for an uninterrupted floor space and giving occupants the sensation that they are ‘floating on air'.

Lightweight carbon seats
To reinforce the impression of space and lightness the four seats themselves are constructed from a stylish lightweight carbon fibre frame, with inner panels constructed from nylon mesh inserts.

Inspired by the protective back supports worn by freestyle skiers, the seats are like lightweight exoskeletons, fitting closely around the body to offer maximum protection with minimum intrusion into the cabin. The seat frames feature the same twisting forms that are found in the door grab handles.

The seat backs are designed to fold forward to create a flat load platform for bulky objects, which is supplemented by the generous flat load area found underneath the seats.

The cabin can also be configured to carry different loads of all shapes and sizes. The seat assemblies can be removed and replaced with specialised fitments such as bicycle carriers, while the generous door pockets are designed to accept a range of flexible storage modules.

4 Colour and Material Design

"We took a more radical approach to the iosis MAX, taking kinetic design to a new level through the creative use of quality high-technology materials and a more sensual execution - both for the exterior and the interior of the vehicle," says chief designer for colour and material design, Ruth Pauli. "The final concept has a unique, futuristic style which combines advanced lightweight materials with sophisticated textures, colours and three-dimensional effects."

The colours selected for the interior were chosen to complement the striking
‘Limelight' of the exterior, while at the same time creating a spacious, airy and sophisticated ambience.

Different tones of luminous natural greys feature on most interior surfaces. Small details are picked out in a bright acidic yellow to add visual impact and stress the dynamic, sculptural character of the shapes and graphics.

Imaginative textures
Visual depth provides a key element of a material's textural language. Although the interior features advanced lightweight materials, imaginative use of three-dimensional textures and surface finishes allows many of the parts to combine a technical feel with more sensuous natural characteristics.

A similar texture is used on the cabin floor, where it is covered by a thick layer of polar green silicon to create a unique three-dimensional effect. The polar green translucent silicon creates a visual distortion of the floor surface, giving the impression of ‘puddles' of translucent colour across the floor.

Lightweight seat materialsThe lightweight seats with their striking skeletal structure and bold graphics provide a key focal point within the interior. The choice of materials, including the mesh inserts, was inspired by the delicate, technical structures and minimalistic design of paragliders and racing catamarans.

The visual impact of the seats is maximised by the extreme textural contrasts in materials, textures and colours: the futuristic chalk white weave of the carbon fibre frame; the smooth dolphin grey leather on the seat panels; the acidic yellow rubber infill sections; the mesh in the seat inserts; and the brushed aluminium of the handle on the seat base.

Visible structure
The use of lightweight materials and technologies in the iosis MAX is also communicated through the visible structure which is revealed in both the roof and the cabin floor.

The visible structure creates an impression of lightness and efficiency similar to lightweight sports cars and state-of-the-art architecture.

5.1 Practicality and versatility

The iosis MAX concept explores a range of innovative solutions which could provide future MAV vehicles with increased practicality and flexibility.

"We gave particular attention to developing new door opening concepts for
iosis MAX," explains Patrick Verhée, Ford of Europe design innovation and show-car manager. "We wanted to demonstrate how MAV owners could benefit from more flexible carrying capacity in their vehicles, without encountering any frustrating obstacles."

Versatile tailgate design
Vehicles with large tailgates often face difficulties when loading or unloading in a confined space, such as a congested multi-storey car park, because of the extra space required to open the tailgate fully. The iosis MAX overcomes this problem by adopting a unique two piece tailgate design, which allows the tailgate to be opened completely, even when there is restricted space behind or above the vehicle.

Opening the tailgate involves a simple two-stage process: the lower section, which operates using a special double parallelogram linkage, swings up and locks onto the upper tailgate; the combined assembly then opens normally, revealing a generous loading aperture.

The upper tailgate can also be opened independently, to allow small items to be loaded quickly and conveniently.

Optimised side loadingTo provide even greater loading flexibility, the iosis MAX utilises a B-pillarless construction. In combination with clever hinge mechanisms on the front and rear side doors, this creates a wide, unobstructed aperture for optimised side loading.

Further flexibility is added by the innovative ‘floating' seats, which can be folded down to provide a flat load platform on the seat backs. This enables owners to place long, large loads on top of the folded seats. Dual hood function
New opening kinematics are also utilised in the hood mechanism, which has an innovative dual function design. The hood is mounted using a special pantograph mechanism, which enables the panel to open parallel to the front of the vehicle so that its sits close to the surface of the windscreen.

The hood design incorporates an active hood system, to deliver improved pedestrian protection. At the same time, the opening mechanism gives much better access to the engine compartment, so that maintenance and checks can be carried out without any obstruction from the hood panel.

Ingenious door opening concepts and the novel seating design mean that maximum benefit can be realised from the available interior space, even when the vehicle is being used in confined spaces.

5.2 Environmental sustainability

Improved environmental sustainability was an important element in the iosis MAX concept, particularly in the area of operating efficiency.

Advanced aerodynamics, lightweight construction techniques and innovative powertrain - using technologies from future Ford models - have been employed to ensure that the vehicle delivers low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions, without any compromise to the responsive performance demanded by modern motorists.

EcoBoost engine technology

d torque and responsive performance of a large capacity engine, but with the size, weight and fuel economy of a much smaller unit.

EcoBoost engines will be progressively introduced to Ford's European product range from 2010.

Optimised fuel efficiency
The 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine in the iosis MAX is further optimised through the use of additional smart technologies to minimise fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

A new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, intelligent

alternator and electric powersteering all ensure that power is only drawn from the engine when it is required, reducing unnecessary fuel consumption.

The Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, which will be introduced in 2010, automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is at idle - at a stop light, for example - and restarts the engine when the driver wants to move off, saving the fuel wasted while the vehicle is stationary.

Once the brake pedal is released, or the accelerator or clutch pedal is pressed, the engine starts quickly and quietly. The process is almost imperceptible, and happens long before gear selection is completed.

The EcoBoost engine is partnered by Ford's latest PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, already available in the Ford Focus and Ford C-MAX models. Here, the gearbox ratios are optimised to suit the power characteristics of the EcoBoost engine to deliver maximum fu

el efficiency under all driving conditions.

Simulations calculate that the iosis MAX could achieve CO2 emissions of 125 g/km.

Advanced aerodynamicsThe concept's environmental sustainability is enhanced by the extensive use of lightweight construction materials in the body structure and interior features, and through careful attention to its aerodynamic design.

Key aerodynamic features include: the ‘flying buttress' rear door pillars; the advanced rear wing design; a diffuser under the rear bumper; reduced tyre width; and active front cooling ducts in the main lower trapezoidal grille, which are blanked off when not required.
